The brief for this project requested that we develop a new sense of identity for an existing building that might better represent the civic nature of public radio and its role as a collector and disseminator of information. We proposed a new façade of photovoltaic ribbons that wrap the existing building and create several new spaces for public interaction, including a new café and a more visually accessible broadcast room. The play of the new skin against the existing building shell was meant to initiate a discourse about the nature of public vs. private in the realm of contemporary media and the complicated blurring that takes place between the two. Meanwhile, the ecologically conscientious nature of the renovation communicates a clear sense of civic responsibility to the public.
