The design concept for this project in New York City was rooted in the topography that gave Manhattan its name as the “island of mountains”.  A grass hill emerges from the tight, triangular site and is propagated from the earth up in to the sky, and from street level down to the subway system below.  The site’s geometry is manifested in folded and tapered planes, voids, and solids in the form of trellises, ramps, and berms that organize the use and experience of the overall space.  The hill’s placement and massing creates two primary spaces; a sun-drenched grass slope that faces South with views towards City Hall, and a more intimate, shaded amphitheatre to the North with spaces for public interaction at multiple scales.
